PM Told Spending Cuts Will Hit 'Big Society'

Now we know for sure exactly what the the so called Big Society stands for Big Con which equals big losts in both public and voluntary sectors with cheap labour. Its no wonder that the coalition is very divided about the Big Con if you see a earlier article written see http://gordonlyew.blogspot.com/2011/02/big-society-chinese-voluntary-sector.html

The Prime Minister has been warned spending cuts could see Britain's volunteers being turned away from projects.

Dame Elisabeth Hoodless said the cuts could undermine David Cameron's key policy of forming a 'Big Society'.

Dame Elisabeth is stepping down as the head of Britain's largest volunteering charity, the Community Service Volunteers, after more than 40 years.

She told Sky's political editor Adam Boulton that if money were withdrawn too quickly from projects then the future for volunteering would be "dire."

Dame Elisabeth said the Big Society had "immense potential" but criticised a lack of strategy from the government.

She also said there should be more opportunities for 18-year-olds to become involved in volunteering.

Her comments are another blow to the government's Big Society concept.

Liverpool City Council announced last week they would no longer support the project because of cuts to public spending.

It was one of four pilot areas for the scheme but withdrew last week.

Shadow minister for the Cabinet Office Tessa Jowell said: "The Tory-led government are on the brink of destroying this country's great tradition of community support and solidarity."

However Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude told Sky News the Big Society was "taking hold" and denied there was any cause for concern about the project.
